The St. Kevin’s Area Planning Collaborative is conducting community meetings to help shape the future of Upham’s Corner – now that St. Kevin’s School property (516 Columbia Road) has closed – through a community visioning process. Meetings are planned for April 16, and in May.
The Talbot-Norfolk Triangle Neighbors United group is also involved in a community-led planning process: the area is a hot spot for development, with a new train station on the Fairmount Line coming to Talbot Avenue in 2011. Area residents are concerned about future traffic and parking issues, and there are many vacant lots that could be developed as housing or preserved as greenspace. The next meeting will discuss “Future Look of Our Neighborhood/Vacant Land Use” on Wed. April 22, 6:45 p.m.
A third effort, called the Mid Dorchester Action Plan, is looking at the Codman Square, Four Corners and Bowdoin-Geneva commerical areas. A series of community workshops and visioning sessions will develop land use and design guidelines for the vacant DND properties within the study area. Led by the Boston Redevelopment Authority and the Dept. of Neighborhood Development, the first workshop is scheduled for April 28, 6 p.m. For details on these and other meetings, check the DEHC online calendar.

beetle ranchers wanted

Posted March 17th, 2009 by rfoley and filed in Greening Dorchester, Opportunities

The Neponset River Watershed Assocation needs backyard beetle ranchers to raise small beetles (“Galerucella” beetles) in wading pools. These beetles eat Purple loosestrife plants, a rampant weed choking Neponset wetlands. Purple loosestrife is changing the make-up of these ecosystems and degrading native wildlife habitat. The beetles have an appetite and life cycle very specific to Purple loosestrife.
